Are we the enemy?

How I missed this story when it first appeared, on 27 January 2006, I’m not sure. But thanks to a friend’s sending me a similar story that links to it, I am passing it on now.

Apropos of WikiLeaks, this report has taken on new relevance, since the Obama administration may now be examining its options for putting this Bush administration initiative into effect. To summarize: As of the date of this publication, the Pentagon viewed the internet as an “enemy weapons system” and proposed to develop means to “fight” and possibly destroy it. This is only one facet of a more comprehensive and ambitious plan:

“And, in a grand finale, the document recommends that the United States should seek the ability to ‘provide maximum control of the entire electromagnetic spectrum.’

“U.S. forces should be able to ‘disrupt or destroy the full spectrum of globally emerging communications systems, sensors, and weapons systems dependent on the electromagnetic spectrum.’”

Whether the Pentagon could, or can, actually effect this is in question. But one thing is sure: Today more than ever before, it will feel motivated to consider trying it. Call it the WikiLeaks Effect.
